How Do You Install Solar Panels and Battery Storage in the UK?

Ever wondered what a real-world solar and battery project actually looks like from start to finish? Many people hear about solar panels and home batteries, but rarely get to see how the process works in practice.

Sometimes, one good project leads to another. This customer in Ringwood first met JME Energy’s team when we installed a Hypervolt EV charger at their home. During that visit, the conversation naturally turned to solar power and how it could work alongside their new charger.

For this customer, it made perfect sense to explore the idea further. But how does it work? Let’s take a look at the behind-the-scenes action.

Project Overview – Solar & Battery Setup

    EV charger installation

After a smooth EV charger installation, this Ringwood customer knew exactly who to call for their next step toward greener living. Trust was already built, so when they decided to explore solar power, they came straight back to JME Energy.

We designed a system that would be both efficient and ready for the future. The setup includes 10 high-quality solar panels, a 3.6kW GivEnergy hybrid inverter, and a powerful 9.5kWh Gen 3 battery. Together, these work to capture the sun’s energy, store it, and power the home day and night.

    The result?

A smart renewable energy system that reduces reliance on the grid, lowers bills, and sets the stage for an energy-independent future.

    Smart Planning from Day One

    Solar panel battery installed

In this project, the groundwork for the solar and battery system began months earlier during the customer’s EV charger installation. By thinking ahead, we reduced future work, avoided unnecessary mess, and made the solar step faster and smoother.

    1. Pre-Planning the Cable Route

During the EV charger installation, we mapped out the cable path for the future solar and battery system. This meant we could run the necessary cables in advance instead of going back later to cut, drill, or re-route.
The result is less disruption for the homeowner and a cleaner, more professional finish.

    2. Choosing the Right Cable for Efficiency

We opted for a 16mm cable for the long run between the main supply and the solar system. This size wasn’t just chosen at random; it was selected to reduce energy loss over distance, ensuring the system runs at peak efficiency.
Armoured cable also offers added durability and protection, which is essential for long-term reliability.

    3. Safety Beyond the Standard

    63-amp isolator

Safety was a top priority. While many installations simply meet the minimum requirements, we went further. The system was fitted with a 63-amp isolator, RCBOs (Residual Current Breakers with Overcurrent protection), and surge protection.
This means the home is safeguarded against overloads, faults, and sudden power surges. It gives the customer peace of mind for years to come.

    Technical Expertise That Stands Out

    AC and DC components installed

At JME Energy, we believe technical work should not only meet regulations but exceed them. In this project, we paid close attention to how DC and AC components were installed.

While both types of cables shared the same trunking for a cleaner look, they were mechanically separated using Copex tubing. This ensures there’s no interference between the two systems and keeps everything compliant with strict industry safety rules.

The wiring was carried out with precision, kept neat, well-organised, and easy to follow. This approach enhances system safety and makes future maintenance straightforward.

What the Customer Gained from Solar & Battery Installation

Here’s what the customer gained from our expert solar panel installation service:

    1. Store Excess Energy for Night Use or Cloudy Days

One of the biggest advantages of having both solar panels and a battery system is the ability to store excess power generated. During sunny hours, your panels often produce more electricity than you need at that moment.
Instead of sending it all back to the grid, the battery stores this surplus energy. Later, at night or on cloudy days when your panels produce less, you can draw power directly from your battery. This means you’re using your own clean energy for more hours of the day.

    2. Lower Energy Bills

When you use more of the energy you generate, you buy less from the grid, and that directly cuts down your electricity bills. Over time, these savings can be significant.
More importantly, you’re in control of your energy. You decide when and how to use it without worrying about fluctuating prices or grid availability. This combination of cost savings and independence gives homeowners peace of mind.

    3. Reduce Reliance on the Grid

With a battery storage system, you are less dependent on your energy supplier. Even if there’s a power cut in your area, your home can still have electricity from the stored energy in your battery. This is especially valuable during peak demand times or in areas where grid outages are common.

    Final Result: A Satisfying Installation

The final installation was completed with a level of precision and care that reflects JME Energy’s commitment to quality. Every cable, connection, and component was neatly arranged to ensure both safety and long-term reliability.
The customer was thrilled with the result, knowing their new system is built to last and ready for future upgrades if needed. This project once again proved JME Energy’s ability to take on complex installations.

Could Your Home Be Next? Be Part of the Green Future

Sometimes, a simple chat about one service, like adding an EV charger, can spark ideas for bigger projects that boost your energy independence. Many homeowners start small and soon discover the benefits of combining solar, battery storage, and other smart solutions.
If you’re curious about what’s possible for your home, JME Energy is ready to help. We can design a setup that fits your needs, your budget, and your future plans.

    FAQs

    1. Will my solar and battery work during a power outage?

Yes, if your system is set up with backup capability. Many modern inverters and batteries can automatically switch to stored energy when the grid goes down, keeping your essential appliances running.

    2. How long does a solar installation take?

Most residential solar and battery installations take 2–5 days. However, it depends on the complexity. JME Energy handles all permits, safety checks, and custom adjustments to ensure a smooth and tidy setup.
